Acura TL 1999 - 2003 review
The 1999-2003 Acura TL is a stylish-looking well-equipped premium sedan based on Honda Accord. The TL offers smooth and powerful V6 engine, roomy comfortable interior with luxury feel and good handling.
On the downside, the TL requires premium gasoline and Acura parts aren't cheap.
There is also plenty of complaints about the automatic transmission, although other than that, it's a solid, well-built vehicle.
The 1999-2003 Acura TL is a front-wheel drive four-door sedan.
The only powertrain choice was the transversely-mounted 3.2L SOHC VTEC V6 engine mated with 4-speed (later replaced with 5-speed) automatic transmission. No manual transmission was offered.
The 1999-2003 Acura TL engine has a timing belt that needs to be replaced in recommended intervals.
Acura TL has independent double-wishbone in the front and multi-link double-wishbone in the rear suspension. All four wheels have disk brakes. The ABS is standard.
The TL's premium interior offers plenty of room and comfort for the driver and the passengers.
Fit and finish is excellent. User-friendly controls are well laid out, large instruments are simple and easy to read. The audio system sounds good.
Front seats are very comfortable with good side support. The rear seat offers decent room. The trunk is spacious, but loading access is fairly narrow and rear seat back doesn't fold down.
On the road, the Acura TL offers good handling with precise, responsive steering. The car feels solid on highway; stable on curves. The ride is firm, with good road feel. It's fairly quiet inside the cabin, although some road noise is noticeable. The 3.2L VTEC engine is very smooth. The car accelerates quickly and offers good passing power, yet it has one of the best EPA-estimated highway fuel economy among upscale sedans with V6 engine.
In the NHTSA frontal crash tests, the 2001-2003 Acura TL scored four stars for both the driver and the front passenger. In the side-impact crash tests, the 2001-2003 Acura TL received four stars for the front and five stars for the rear seat protection. For more details visit Safercar.gov
The 1999-2003 Acura TL also received "Good" overall rating in the frontal offset crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS).

What to look for buying a used Acura TL
As a first step, check used car history records. A history report may help you to uncover some of the problems the car might have in the past such as accidents, flood damage, rolled back odometer, etc. Follow this link: How to check used car history
- Check the service records if available - it's important to verify that the car was properly maintained.
- If the "ABS", "SRS" or "Check Engine" light is on, have the problem assessed with your mechanic or a dealer before buying a car; in worst cases repair might be quite expensive.
- Pay more attention to test automatic transmission. Strong "thump" when shifting into reverse could indicate a problem.
- Check auto-dimming mirror.
- Check with Acura dealer if all necessary recalls have been performed.

Few maintenance tips
- Wash and wax your vehicle regularly to protect the paint.
- If you live in the area with high humidity, rustproofing will help to protect the car body from corrosion.
- Regular oil changes are important to keep your engine in a good shape.
- Change transmission fluid in recommended intervals using original transmission fluid.
- Stick with original Acura parts and fluids.
- Follow recommended maintenance schedule and keep all the fluids clean and topped up.
- Have your car inspected, at least once a year, in a garage on the lift (e.g. when doing tire rotation) to keep it safe. Many components (e.g. brakes, steering, suspension) cannot be properly inspected by simple visual inspection at fast lube places; the vehicle must be on the lift.
